Are fan edits emerging as the next big film promotion strategy?

Film trailers have been a cornerstone of movie marketing for decades. Trailers are designed to attract audiences by summarising an entire film in just a few minutes. But today, trailers have become more than just marketing tools, they’re events in themselves. Social media reacts within hours, with reaction videos, analyses, theories, and memes flooding feeds the moment a trailer drops. Teaser trailers have emerged, fifteen- to thirty-second previews meant to prepare us for the full trailer, yet somehow they rarely feel fresh anymore.

For cinephiles like me, this has made modern trailers feel monotonous, over-reliant on pop song remixes and cringe-worthy one-liners after the title reveal. As a result, I often scroll past them vertically on social media. It’s left me convinced that the trailer is ready for something new, and fan edits might be the next big thing.

The untapped potential of fan edits

Fan edits are re-imaginings of existing footage, often synced with trending music to create rapid, emotionally engaging narratives. Digital platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts have brought fan edits into the mainstream. Today, editing software is accessible, and distribution is instantaneous, allowing these videos to reach millions overnight.

Unlike traditional trailers, fan edits are created out of passion. This authenticity resonates with audiences, particularly Gen Z, who crave engagement and relatability over polish and corporate messaging. A single well-crafted edit can spark nostalgia, rediscover forgotten films, and introduce music and movies to entirely new audiences, all without paid promotion.

Why should studios take notice

Fan edits have a unique allure. They feel participatory, authentic, and culturally in tune. In an era where studios spend millions trying to speak Gen Z’s language, fan edits already do this naturally. By acknowledging and sharing these edits, studios could not only broaden their reach but also strengthen relationships with passionate fandoms.

This isn’t to say fan edits have gone unnoticed by mainstream media. In 2023, for example, actor Pedro Pascal appeared in a ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch that referenced a viral fan edit of him from Kingsman: The Golden Circle that had been circulating at the time.

The takeaway

Traditional film trailers will not disappear overnight, but their influence is shifting. Fan edits highlight the changing landscape of media consumption, where audiences participate in marketing rather than passively consume it. Studios that embrace this shift, repost fan edits, or adopt their aesthetics, will engage fans in a way that feels organic, creative, and highly shareable.
