Storytelling and how physical shops still provide a stage
Speak to a Consultant
In a world where online shopping is almost effortless, I’ve noticed something interesting: the role of the traditional shop is changing, but it’s far from disappearing.
Shops are becoming experience-led showrooms, and that shift really matters. People genuinely want to spend time in them, and for those of us in PR, that makes them a powerful storytelling platform we can’t afford to overlook. A shop now acts as a living, breathing expression of a brand.
I’ve seen people wander around stores simply to enjoy the atmosphere, to see what’s new, to get inspired. It’s all about touching, feeling and imagining things in person, something no website can yet fully replicate.
Being seen, felt and experienced
Although I do most of my shopping online, I still find myself drawn to physical stores. There’s something about seeing, touching, and experiencing a product. That first glance at a display, the feel of a fabric, or even just chatting with someone who knows the product, immediately grabs my attention in a way scrolling through a website never does.
Once you’re in a shop, you begin to imagine the product in your life, feel its quality, and get a real sense of whether it’s right for you. The storytelling opportunity comes with that hands-on experience and naturally builds desire. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve left a store thinking, “Yes, I need this,” even if I end up ordering it online later (once I have found a cheeky discount code!)
Consider stores like Lush, where the smell, colour, and even the slightly over-enthusiastic chatter of staff all contribute to the brand story. Whether you’re testing a bath bomb, learning about ethical sourcing, or being ‘politely’ persuaded to try just one more soap, every interaction somehow makes you feel connected to the brand on a personal level – whether you intended to or not.
For me, and for many shoppers today, the shop is where the experience shapes the decision. It guides you from curiosity to confidence, from interest to desire, and finally to action. These impressionable moments are what shape long-term loyalty and drive future sales.
The hybrid retail model
Something I absolutely love is how the smartest brands today understand that online and offline are two sides of the same coin, not competitors. Physical shops give customers an experience you can’t replicate online, while e-commerce offers unmatched convenience. Together, they create a seamless, enjoyable journey that meets people wherever they are.
One trend I particularly enjoy is watching vloggers do “a look round B&M” or “a look round HomeSense.” These videos are excellent storytelling opportunities. They bring the shop experience to life for people who can’t visit in person, and they extend the reach of the store in a way that feels authentic and fun. It’s proof of how physical retail spaces can spark inspiration, share stories, and create connections.
From a PR perspective, showroom-style retail spaces are invaluable. They enhance trust, reduce returns, shape perception, and create lasting impressions. Even if the till isn’t ringing right away, these spaces turn curious passers-by into confident, loyal customers.
