AI fatigue is setting in: what it means for PR

There was a moment, not that long ago, when adding “AI-powered” to anything was enough to make it newsworthy. It signalled innovation, future thinking and relevance. This all worked very well… until it didn’t.
Now, in a landscape where every brand, platform and product claims some form of AI integration, the novelty has worn off. Audiences are no longer impressed by the label alone. Journalists are quicker to question it, and PR teams are starting to feel the shift. AI isn’t a hook anymore; it is actually the baseline, and that changes everything about how it needs to be communicated.
When everything is AI, nothing stands out
AI used to be the differentiator, the thing that elevated an announcement and made it feel like it belonged to the future. However, it has now become the default expectation, and when so many press releases, product launches and campaign leads lean on the same framing, the impact doesn’t just lessen, it starts to disappear entirely.
What you’re left with is a kind of white noise, where announcements blur into one another, and audiences disengage almost immediately. Simply describing something as “AI-driven” no longer answers the only question people actually care about, which is what it meaningfully does for them, and why they should pay attention in the first place. PR can’t rely on the term to carry a story anymore, it has to work harder, going into the detail, the application and the outcome, in order to prove that something is genuinely worth noticing.
Scepticism is replacing excitement
What we’re seeing now isn’t just fatigue, it’s scrutiny, with audiences far more alert to vague claims, inflated language and messaging that sounds impressive without actually saying very much. This creates a moment where PR either re-establishes credibility or gradually loses it, because messaging can no longer rely on broad, future-facing statements that feel detached from reality. According to the Edelman Trust Barometer, trust in institutions and communications is increasingly tied to transparency and proof, rather than promises.
Instead, messaging needs to become more grounded, more specific and far more accountable to what is actually being delivered. Real use cases, clear outcomes and tangible impact are no longer nice to have; they are essential. This is particularly because audiences are increasingly willing to question, compare and challenge what they’re being told, rather than simply taking it at face value.
The brands that cut through are the ones that don’t follow the pattern
As AI becomes more deeply embedded into everyday products and services, the opportunity isn’t in talking about it more, but talking about it differently. The story naturally shifts away from the technology itself and towards what it actually changes, how noticeable that change is and who is experiencing the benefit of it.
The campaigns that are cutting through aren’t leading with the same recycled language, they are creating space for something more distinct, whether that’s through sharper storytelling, clearer outcomes or a tone that feels recognisably human rather than formulaic. It becomes less about proving that something uses AI and more about giving people a reason to care about it in a way that doesn’t feel like everything else they’ve already seen.
AI fatigue doesn’t come from the technology itself, but from the way it’s talked about. When audiences are constantly seeing the same language, the same claims and the same structure repeated, attention naturally starts to drop off.
In that kind of landscape, to stand out, you have to know how to step outside of it, because when everything starts to look and sound the same, the only thing that cuts through is something that doesn’t follow the pattern.
