I’m officially starting my professional life in the world of PR as a Junior Account Executive, and I couldn’t be more excited!

After wrapping up my undergraduate degree in business and marketing at Oxford Brookes University, I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of digital, social, and all things creative. Now, it’s time for me to carry those lessons into my professional life and continue my journey of growth and discovery.

In the whirlwind of new opportunities, I’ve reflected on what I’ve learned so far, and I’ve found a pretty simple recipe for success…

It’s a mix of small yet powerful ingredients that anyone, at any stage of their career can use:

  • One cup of: enjoyment
  • Half a cup of: small changes that make big differences
  • A quarter cup: of risk-taking
  • A dash of: optimism
  • A pinch of: constructive criticism

One cup of enjoyment:

Here’s the thing I’ve realised: when you’re passionate about something, it’s much easier to put in the work. For me, that passion lies in creativity and collaboration.

I’m a visual learner, and there’s something magical about sketching out ideas, whether on a whiteboard with my team or in my trusty notebook. It’s like creating a roadmap for success but with doodles and lots of coffee.

Half a cup of small changes that make a big difference:

I’ve learned that perfectionism can slow me down. I used to agonise over every detail, trying to make everything perfect from the get-go. But here’s the truth: it’s the tiny, seemingly insignificant changes that lead to big improvements.

A quick idea. A slight tweak. The small changes add up. And the best part? They’re achievable. It’s proof that progress doesn’t have to be massive to matter.

A quarter cup of risk-taking:

Let’s talk about risks. Here’s something true for me: every big step I’ve taken in my career started with one small, terrifying risk. Taking risks might feel uncomfortable, but guess what? It’s the only way to grow.

Whether it’s saying “yes” to that scary opportunity or diving into a new project you know nothing about, those risks push you to stretch beyond what you thought was possible.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that not everything you want to achieve in life will come easily. It does take time to move beyond your comfort zone and into your growth zone.

A dash of optimism:

Okay, let’s get real: life isn’t always smooth sailing. Sometimes, it feels like you’re running a marathon in heels (owie!).

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that optimism is your secret weapon. When things feel out of control, a positive mindset can help you find solutions instead of spiralling.

For me, it’s about reminding myself that I can do this. No matter how long it takes, staying hopeful keeps me moving forward, even on the tough days.

A pinch of constructive criticism:

Constructive criticism used to send me into a panic. Seriously. I’d cringe at the thought of hearing that my work wasn’t “perfect” right away.

Since then, I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone and learnt to embrace feedback as one of the most valuable tools for growth. It’s not about getting everything right the first time. It’s about growing through your mistakes and using that knowledge to do better next time.

You are what you believe!

At the end of the day, you can achieve much more than you had ever thought. Remember, confidence doesn’t appear overnight. It’s built day by day, one small win at a time.

Whether you’re starting a new job, learning a new skill, or just trying to figure things out, trust that every step you take is part of your unique journey.
