Next up in my ‘top three mistakes’ series – video content!

Video is a huge part of social media content, especially with the rise of TikTok and Instagram reels. Used to inspire, inform and engage audiences, video content has the power to capture users on a much deeper level.

As with most things in PR, it’s never a one-size-fits-all. However, I’ve picked out my top three pitfalls many accounts tend to fall prey to when starting to work with video content…

Slow and steady doesn’t always win the race

Attention spans are getting shorter. If a video doesn’t immediately engage or deliver a form of anticipation, users will click off in a heartbeat. The longer your users watch for, the better your pages’ engagement will be.

Try to avoid slow long shots. Don’t linger on one scene for too long and keep every shot as exciting as possible. A great example of fast-paced shots can be seen in this reel showcasing The Ivy’s winter menu.

Not making videos to inspire

One of the most effective ways to generate engagement is to use your videos to inspire. If a video adds aesthetic value and its purpose is to inspire, it’s sure to capture audiences. The reels and TikToks you scroll through are art forms in themselves, so don’t be afraid to be creative!

@bigbooklady’s content is a perfect account when exploring how video content can be used to inspire. Their content conveys an understated yet cosy lifestyle designed to inspire audiences. Take a look at this reel to see how this content creator uses simple shots, different focal points and coordinated colours.

Not including people and/or pets

Many of us know that an easy way to boost your engagement is to include people and/or pets in your social media content. A video with a smiling face or a cute pup tends to perform much better than one that hasn’t!

You only need to look at how well Crufts’ Instagram page is doing to prove this point. The feed is made up of our favourite four-legged friends strutting their stuff and numbers are sky-high!
