Why outsourcing social media is better than doing it in-house

Speak to a Consultant

There’s always been a bit of tension around this topic. Should brands keep social media in-house to stay “authentic”? Or outsource it and risk losing their voice?

From my experience working with clients at Briscoe PR, I’ve found the answer isn’t as black-and-white as people think.

In fact, some of the most authentic, high-performing social media I’ve seen hasn’t come purely from in-house teams – it’s come from strong collaboration between a business and an external partner.

Why I don’t believe in-house automatically means better

A lot of brands assume that, because they are the business, they’re best placed to talk about it. And to a degree, that’s true, no one knows your brand better than you do. But understanding your brand and communicating it effectively on social media are two very different things.

What I often see in-house is content becoming repetitive, teams stretched too thin, a tendency to play it safe, and decisions driven more by internal opinion than by audience response.

The reality is that social media moves far too fast for that. Algorithms change constantly, trends shift overnight, and audience expectations are higher than ever.

It’s one of the reasons more than 70% of companies now outsource at least part of their digital marketing – not because they can’t do it internally, but because it’s become too complex to do well without specialist support.

The power of outsourcing

When brands bring in external support, something shifts and you start to see a real difference: a new perspective, new creative ideas, and a more strategic, data-led approach.

Instead of relying on one person to juggle everything, you’re tapping into the wider skillset of an entire team of specialists.

Research consistently shows that outsourcing gives businesses access to specialist expertise, improves efficiency and scalability, and frees up internal teams to focus on higher-value work.

And from my experience, that’s exactly what happens, content improves, consistency improves, and ultimately, results improve.

Outsourcing needs good communication to create authenticity

This is where I think a lot of brands get it wrong. They assume outsourcing means handing everything over and stepping back – but it really doesn’t.

The best results I’ve seen, by far, come from brands that stay involved. They provide input and updates, but don’t try to control every detail.

Authenticity comes down to whether the content reflects what’s actually happening in your business and that only happens when there’s regular, open communication, a clear internal point of contact, and ongoing sharing of insights, updates, and priorities.

When clients share things like the conversations they’re having with customers, what’s changing internally, or what they’re seeing in their industry, the content instantly improves. It becomes more real, more relevant, and more human.

Interestingly, research backs this up – strong alignment and communication between businesses and their outsourced partners is a key factor in achieving better results and maintaining brand consistency.

I’ve also seen the opposite. When communication is poor, outsourcing can feel generic, disconnected, and off-brand – not because the agency isn’t capable, but because they’re working without the insight they need. You can’t expect someone to represent your brand properly if you’re not bringing them into it.

Overall, I think the most effective approach is to combine the strengths of both. Your in-house team owns the brand, voice, and insight, while your external partner brings strategy, creativity, and execution. The glue that holds it all together is communication. When that’s strong, your external team stops feeling external and starts operating as a true extension of your business.
