As a 24-year-old working at the start of my career in the PR and Marketing industry, I understand how intimidating it can be to branch out, network with others in the field, and balance continuous learning with your day-to-day responsibilities at work.
I’ve been in the industry for six years now, and even today, I still struggle with imposter syndrome, especially when it comes to discussing my work and advising others on best practices.
However, I’ve realised that attending industry events has been incredibly valuable for my growth, especially when starting a career in PR and marketing. These events have not only boosted my confidence but also expanded my skill set, making me much more employable in the long run.
Here are a few reasons why attending an industry event should be on your radar:
Networking opportunities
Industry events are a fantastic way to meet people who can help guide and shape your career. You’ll connect with peers and industry professionals who might turn into valuable contacts for future job opportunities or advice.
Attending these events early in your career gives you the chance to start building your personal brand right from the start. It’s a great opportunity to showcase your passion, enthusiasm, and knowledge, helping you stand out and leave a lasting impression.
For me, my first event really highlighted just how crucial your LinkedIn profile is for your personal brand. It’s like your shop window, especially if you’re job hunting, acting as your own sales pitch.
Continuous learning
I don’t have to tell you, but the PR and marketing world moves very quickly, and attending events gives you firsthand knowledge of the latest trends, tools, and strategies that professionals are using. You can learn from panel discussions, workshops, or speakers who are often industry leaders. This is especially helpful when you’re starting out and trying to understand the bigger picture.
Many events offer hands-on learning opportunities in the form of workshops, which can be a great way to gain new skills or improve existing ones. They often feature case studies from successful companies or campaigns, which can be incredibly useful for gaining practical knowledge of how marketing or PR strategies are executed. I have often learned about successful campaigns and applied certain tactics to my own clients’ campaigns, which have worked really well!
Building confidence
Before attending these events, I never had the confidence to ask questions to people with more experience than me for fear of looking stupid! But now, I’ve realised that asking questions is exactly how they got to where they are today.
Attending and engaging in industry events helps build confidence in talking about your work, ideas, and career aspirations. It also makes networking and conversing with professionals much more comfortable.
Inspiration
There’s nothing quite like hearing from those who have succeeded in the field, and it can be incredibly motivating, especially when you’re just starting your career. It helps you visualise your own growth path. You might also meet people with similar career goals, leading to friendships that keep you motivated as you grow. I’ve met many industry friends, who I might grab coffee with or catch up with before an event, and it really helps the anxiety of turning up alone.
In short, attending industry events in PR and marketing early in your career provides you with the tools to grow professionally, the networks to advance, and the insights to stay relevant in a fast-paced industry. It’s not just about learning what’s happening now but also about positioning yourself for success in the future.
I’ve loved every event I’ve attended and am always on the lookout for new meetups in my local area. My favourite events are South Coast Digital Marketing and The Marketing Meetup Portsmouth. Be brave and come along; I’m always up for a chat!
