You're never too big or too small for PR
Speak to a Consultant“We don’t need PR. We’ve already got more than enough customers.”
“We’re only a small business. PR isn’t really for companies like ours.”
Two very different businesses. Two very different reasons for thinking PR isn’t for them, and yet, both are overlooking what good public relations can actually do.
We’ve recently been speaking to businesses that have been operating successfully for decades, building loyal customer bases, developing strong reputations and growing through word of mouth, without ever investing significantly in PR or marketing.
For some, business is already booming. They have a steady stream of customers, plenty of work coming in and no immediate need to generate more enquiries. For others, PR feels like something reserved for bigger businesses with bigger budgets. Something they’ll consider when they’ve grown a little more.
But PR isn’t just about getting more customers through the door.
We are building a reputation, strengthening relationships, establishing credibility and making sure the right people know who you are and what you stand for.
Those things matter whether you’re a business of five people or five hundred.
“We’re already busy. Why would we need PR?”
It’s a fair question. If your business is thriving and your diary is full, why invest in raising your profile? PR can do much more than generate immediate sales.
Perhaps you’re looking to attract talented people to your team. Maybe you want to become a recognised authority in your industry, strengthen relationships with stakeholders or position your leadership team as experts.
You might be considering expansion, looking to enter a new market or wanting to build a reputation that extends beyond your existing customer base. Even if none of those things are on your immediate agenda, there’s value in maintaining the reputation you’ve spent years building.
After all, a strong reputation isn’t something you only need when business is quiet. The businesses that are well known and trusted today haven’t necessarily waited until they needed publicity to start building their profile.
PR is a long-term investment in how your business is perceived, not simply a tool to switch on when you need more customers.
“We’re too small for PR.”
This is another misconception we come across. There’s a tendency to associate PR with household names, national newspapers and big-budget campaigns. But some of the most interesting stories come from smaller, independent businesses.
You don’t need to be a multinational company to have something worth talking about.
Perhaps you’re doing something differently in your industry. Maybe you’ve built a business around a personal passion, developed an innovative product or have an interesting perspective on a challenge facing your sector. These are all potential opportunities to tell your story.
For a smaller business, building recognition and credibility can make a significant difference. Being featured in a relevant industry publication, sharing your expertise through thought leadership or developing a consistent social media presence can help you establish yourself alongside much larger competitors.
You don’t have to be a big business to have a big story.
“We’ve been around for decades. Isn’t our reputation enough?”
There’s something to be said for a business that has grown entirely through recommendations, relationships and delivering a consistently good service. In fact, that’s a brilliant foundation for PR.
However, there’s a difference between having a strong reputation among the people who already know you and being recognised by the wider audience you might want to reach.
Your customers might recommend you enthusiastically. Your industry peers might know your name. Your existing network might understand exactly what makes your business different. But what about everyone else?
The potential employee who has never heard of you? The journalist looking for an expert in your industry? The prospective business partner researching companies to work with? Or even the next generation of customers who are discovering businesses through social media, online search and AI recommendations?
If your business has spent twenty or thirty years building expertise, relationships and a reputation worth being proud of, there’s a good chance you’ve already got a wealth of stories to tell. The challenge is making sure those stories reach beyond the people who already know them.
It’s never too late to start
One of the things we’ve found particularly interesting in our recent conversations is that some long-established businesses are only now beginning to recognise the opportunities PR and marketing could offer them.
It’s not because what they’ve been doing for decades has stopped working, but because they’re starting to see what else might be possible.
Investing in PR doesn’t mean abandoning the relationships, recommendations and reputation that have helped your business succeed, it’s about building on them.
It might mean sharing the expertise you’ve developed over the years, telling the story behind your business, making your leadership team more visible or introducing your brand to audiences you haven’t previously reached.
You don’t need to start shouting about everything you do, but you need a clear understanding of what you want to achieve, who you want to reach and how you want your business to be perceived.
Whether you’ve been trading for two years or twenty, there is no expiry date on building your reputation.
Is PR right for your business?
At Briscoe PR, we believe every business has a story worth telling. The important part is finding the right way to tell it.
We work with businesses to understand their objectives and develop communications strategies that support them, whether that’s raising awareness, building credibility, establishing industry authority or strengthening an existing reputation.
Think you’re too big, too small or too established to benefit from PR? We’d love to challenge that assumption. You might not need more customers. But there’s always value in being better known, better understood and more trusted.
