Ever spent ages planning, filming, and editing a Reel only for it to get less engagement than a quick post you threw together in minutes? We’ve all been there, and it’s frustrating. But don’t worry, there are a few common reasons why your Reels might be underperforming. Let’s break down what could be going wrong and, more importantly, how to fix it.

No Hook To Grab Attention

The first few seconds of a Reel are everything. If you don’t capture attention straight away, viewers will scroll past, no matter how strong the rest of the video is. A good hook could be text-based (like a question or keyword your audience is searching for) or visual (a quick movement, transition, or dynamic entry into frame). It’s all about creating a reason to stop and watch. Without it, your Reel might never get the chance to shine.

Not Using Hashtags Or Captions Correctly

It’s not just about what’s in your Reel, it’s also what’s under it. Captions aren’t just there to sound clever or drop a few emojis. They help give context, show personality, and invite engagement. Even a simple “Tag a friend who needs this” can boost interaction. Hashtags, meanwhile, are your discoverability BFFs. Instagram uses them (and the keywords in your caption) to figure out who to show your content to. So skip the random trending ones, and go for a mix of relevant, niche, and location-based hashtags that reflect what your Reel is about.

Inconsistent Posting of Reels

If you’re only posting Reels when you feel inspired or have time, you’re not giving your content the chance to build momentum. Posting consistently helps train both the algorithm and your audience to expect (and look forward to) your content. That doesn’t have to mean posting daily, it means finding a schedule that’s realistic and repeatable. Even once or twice a week is good if you stick with it.
